CONTEMPORARY THEATRE OF ATHENS – STAGE Α

STEP 1:Midday, July.A reservist in the military police, in jeans and with long grey hair, watches the traffic on a main road.We hear phrases such as “the tanks are still in the street” and “it’s hot”.
STEP 2:Daybreak, July.A fully loaded blue Toyota Corolla sets out on a journey. It is driven by a foreign woman.Next to her is her friend, an older Greek woman. On the narrow back seat lies her son.We hear the song Sta Psila Ta Parathiria [At the High Windows].They are to travel 2000 kilometres.
STEP 3:As the Toyota passes through the Alps (a natural border between North and South),
our hero is still unaware that:
1. She will be gone for many years 2. She will not get married abroad
3.
She will spend countless evenings at her regular table in a taverna against a background of plaster columns and plastic grapes. She suspects only that she will drink and dance into the small hours and wake up sometime after midday.

Akyllas Karazisis takes a different approach, both lyrical and subversive, to the topic of what it means to be foreign, living life far from one's own country and searching for an identity in a different place. He also directs and performs alongside actors who take on an array of roles in a production in which music is an organic part.
