The other dimension
A series of events aiming to create a broader perception of the work of the National Theatre relating to the cultural sphere and society at large.
New Greek Plays
a. Playwriting Contest for young writers up to 35 years old: Results to be announced in September 2010. The winners see their plays staged at the National Theatre.
b. Commissions: four Greek writers have been commissioned to write one-act plays on the issue of Foreigners in the City.
c. Staged Readings: mini festival of unperformed Greek plays.
Theatre and education
a. Antigone by Sophocles on tour around schools.
b. Workshops for children and adolescents at the National Theatre.
Crossing borders
a. The Greek National Theatre will host the general assembly of the Union des Théâtres de l'Europe in November 2010.
b. Performances on the go:
Orestes by Euripides directed by Yannis Houvardas at Teatro Olympico, Italy in September 2010.
Little Mary by Lena Kitsopoulou directed by Lena Kitsopoulou and Maria Protopappa at Milan, Italy in March 2011 (Project: Milan Meeting Greece).
Foreigners in our city: four one-act plays, a commission of the National Theatre, on tour in Europe as part of the UTE project Paradise Lost.
Our heritage: new perspectives
A complete reading of Homer’s Iliad in 24 sessions (as many as the rhapsodies) by important Greek actresses in a new translation by the academic Dimitris Maronitis and under the female perspective.
Elective Affinities
a. Music Box: Theatre plus music; actors or groups singing and playing music in single performances while actors currently in the ensemble of the National Theatre will create their own music band and perform.
b. Showcase: free theatre groups presenting their latest work as a work-in-progress.
c. Common View: a dialogue with the visual arts, exploring the area where theatre and other art forms meet.
24 / 7: Immigration
A week with various events focusing on cultural work produced by immigrant groups living and working in Greece.
