Anestis Azas (Thessaloniki 1978) studied in Theatre Department of Aristoteles University in Thessaloniki and in Hochschule für Schauspielkunst „Ernst Busch“ in Berlin (Direction).

He has worked as an assistant director to Dimiter Gotscheff (Selbstmörder, Volksbühne 2007, The Persians, Epidauros 2009) and Rimini Protokoll (Prometheus in Athens, 2010).

Since 2008 he has worked as a free lancer stage director mostly in Greece and Germany. He has also collaborated with the Onassis Cultural Centre and the National Theatre of Greece, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse and Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Theater & Orchester Heidelberg, Theaterhaus Jena, Kammerspiele München. His work includes classical texts (Aeschylus, Heiner Müller, Koltès), texts by contemporary authors (Dmitrij Gawrisch, Daniela Janjic, Manolis Tsipos).

For the last seven years, he has been working closely with Prodromos Tsinikoris on documentary theatre projects, such as: A journey by train (Athens Festival 2011) a documentary play about the reduction and privatisation of the greek railways, Epidaurus, a Documentary (Epidauros Festival 2012) a critical play about the history of Epidauros Festival, Telemachus- Should I stay or should I go? (Onassis Culture Centre / Ballhaus Naunynstrasse Berlin 2013) an on stage confrontation of two generations of greek immigrants in Germany, the „generation of the Gastarbeiter“ and the „crisis- generation“, Clean City (Onassis Cultural Centre / Kammerspiele Munich 2016) a critical portrait of Greece by the perspective of immigrant cleaning ladies in Athens.

For the Athens Festival 2015 he directed a research- play about the refugee drownings in the Aegean Sea and the responsibility of greek Coast Guard, Case Pharmakonisi or The right of Water.

Since October 2015 Anestis Azas together with Prodromos Tsinikoris are directors of the Experimental Stage -1 of the National Theatre in Athens.
