Theatro AntiLogos and the Solo Gia Treis theatre company present their co-production of Michalis Papadopoulos’s Which Europe?, a contemporary play exploring the major predicaments facing Europe’s citizens today.
Two sisters, Roza and Eleni, both in their fifties, are taking the train to their doctor in Ano Patissia. In the same carriage are Andreas, a man of about their age, and Hamza, a Palestinian heading to Victoria Square to take part in a demonstration.
An unexpected fault causes the train to stop between two stations. Confinement, uncertainty and the suspicion of a possible terrorist attack push the passengers to their limits. During the time they spend together, they tell one another their personal stories, confront their prejudices and fears, and question what they had once taken for granted.
Through the four passengers, Which Europe? examines topics such as the re-emergence of racism and fascism; unemployment, and the way it undermines human dignity; the inner conflict of people who are unwilling or unable to reconcile their deeply held views with their moral conscience; as well as disappointment, silence and resignation.
In an era when violence against those who are perceived as different is on the rise, the play is a reminder of our collective and individual responsibility towards what is going on around us. Its characters are not strangers; they are familiar, everyday people, friends and neighbours. They voice thoughts and attitudes that we have all heard but rarely thought about, challenging audiences to confront their own attitudes towards the world and their fellow human beings.
