Leonardo and his sister Vittoria are preparing feverishly to depart for the country. Social convention demands that they live a life of luxury, yet their debts are so great that this has become an impossibility. They cannot afford to go, but how can Leonardo stay behind when his beloved Giacinta is also leaving for the summer accompanied by a handsome young rival? Their expensive sojourn in the country makes their financial problems even worse and will ultimately force them to compromise.
With humour and sly irony, Goldoni castigates the passion with which his fellow-countrymen assert their status through luxury vacations, describing it as madness and folly. Since the mid-18th century, when The holiday trilogy was written, it is a type of behaviour that has changed little, undermining the dignity and humility of human existence. Director Nikos Mastorakis brings his unique and dynamic vision to Goldonis topical comedy, assisted by a superb production team and cast.
Main Theatre productions are performed in rotating repertory.
