The starting point of Müllers work is a long exchange of ideas between the writer and William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Müller wrote this strange and mysterious play in 1977, while translating Shakespeare's play for Benno Bessons Deutsches Theater production.
It borrows key scenes and characters from Shakespeare's work, but without copying the action and the dialogue. Hamlet, or rather an actor playing Hamlet and Ophelia in Dimiter Gotscheffs staging of the play for the Deutsches Theater, appears as a ghost haunted by figures from the past. From a nightmarish juxtaposition of contradictory collective experiences, many issues relating to European history emerge.
