From 16.09.2009 to 20.09.2009

Coproductions - JOINT PRODUCTIONS

In collaboration with the Cyprus Theatre Organisation and the British theatre group Imitating the Dog, the National Theatre of Greece presents Tales from the Bar of Lost Souls, an international co-production that combines modern technologies with narrative and physical techniques. The production is part of the British Council's Creative Collaboration Project, which aims to support the collaboration of artists from the countries of South East Europe and Great Britain.

The results of this pioneering collaboration between the National Theatre of Greece, the Cyprus Theatre Group and Imitating the Dog will not be limited to the performances that will take place first in Athens, then in Nicosia, and finally on tour in Great Britain. Great emphasis will also be put on the educational dimension of the project, with young people’s workshops being held in all three countries. The workshops will immerse participants in a theatrical process and introduce them to new ways of communicating and perceiving the modern world, teaching them multimedia procedures and techniques.

At the end of his life, a man asks his only friend to right a wrong that he committed many years earlier. His friend accepts, and sets out on a journey that takes him back to the Bar of Lost Souls, a place where one's deepest desires are said to come true.
The Bar of Lost Souls is located on the waterfront. It is frequented by all manner of people: pimps, prostitutes, sailors, petty criminals, policemen and even judges. On opening the door, you can immediately smell the musty air and hear the song emanating from the small stage at the back of the dark room.  If you dare to enter, you need eyes in the back of your head in case someone tries to grab your bag or slash your face. It's dangerous, all right; but if you manage to get in, it'll be an experience you'll never forget.

The production is inspired by the mix of cultures that make up the particular community of Mediterranean ports, where the concept of national borders and identities is constantly thrown into doubt by the ceaseless flow and intermingling of different nationalities. Tales from the Bar of Lost Souls is a magical realist story of forbidden love, crime and the possibility of finding redemption in the unlikeliest of places. The audience observes the action through the window of the bar as a host of dark characters are revealed and stories of murder, love and forgiveness unfold.
