Poland. A small town. A small community. A class in a school. Ten classmates with different religions, different beliefs, but the same nationality. Their lives from 1920 to the present day. Changing political regimes, the Second World War, the Nazi invasion. Nothing and no one remains the same. Coexistence and solidarity are transformed into hatred. Hatred begets new hatred and the ties that bind are rent asunder.
This riveting play, written by the Polish dramatist Tadeusz Słobodzianek in 2009, is based on the true story of the murder of Jewish residents of the town of Jedwabne by Catholics with whom they had lived side-by-side. With cool detachment and high emotion, the play records the lives of the classmates from the past into the present. Will time be able to heal their wounds? Will the present exonerate the past?
What happens when historical circumstances mark people’s lives and reveal the darker aspects of themselves?
This much-discussed production, both moving and thought-provoking, returns to the Main Stage.
