Thornton Wilder makes his first appearance at the National Theatre of Greece, introducing us to the charming and hilarious The Matchmaker! The Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s comedy, which opened on Broadway in December 1955, setting a record for performances and receiving rave reviews from the critics, will be directed by Thomas Moschopoulos at the Marika Kotopouli Stage of the Rex Theatre.
A journey to 19th century New York begins with the resourceful matchmaker Dolly Levi as a guide, enthusiastically undertaking to find the ideal wife for the rich but cantankerous widower Horace Vandergelder. At the same time, Dolly helps Horace's niece, Ermengarde, marry her intended, and works to ensure that everyone finds their ideal mate – or at least someone to relieve their loneliness.
In this delightful farce about love and money, everyone yearns for adventure and attainable happiness. But first, they have to overcome a series of comic obstacles: hiding, disguising themselves, conspiring, and facing unexpected situations in which the shrewd Dolly invariably has a hand.
Thomas Moschopoulos, with the help of a superb creative team and a dazzling cast, uses the conventions of farce, with its rapid-fire set-pieces, to talk about people’s need for companionship and how they have to reconcile themselves with the difficult realities of life.
