The story of an unprecedented love and a dance of passion with a terrible price is brought to the stage by an inspired choreographer’s interpretation of a play by a subversive writer. Oscar Wilde draws on the biblical story of Salome to create his own version of the events that led to the beheading of John the Baptist. Salome’s wanton dance becomes the means by which her most extreme desire is pursued. Stavros Litinas’s production combines flamenco with modern dance and music to give a modern version of history, locating the action in a timeless environment of social decay and decadence, focusing at the same time on the power relations between prey and predator.
