Last season’s hit production of Luigi Pirandello’s Tonight we improvise returns to the National.
Dimitris Mavrikios masterfully pairs Pirandello’s writing with the music of Manos Hadjidakis in his production of this landmark of modern theatre, which sees cast of exceptional actors identifying utterly with their roles and fully inhabiting the lives of the characters they are playing.
A theatre company is attempting to adapt Pirandello’s own novella, Leonora, addio!, for the stage. The power of the creation over the creator is a dynamic that is essential for art, and especially for Pirandello, and the play seems to have been written to reflect this explosive relationship. The third in his ‘theatre in the theatre’ trilogy, it investigates his favourite theme of the confusion between the imagination and reality.
