Spring Awakening

by Frank Wedekind

From 15.11.2008 to 08.02.2009

CONTEMPORARY THEATRE OF ATHENS – STAGE Α

The adolescent students of a provincial school experience a series of problems, anxieties and questions - to which no one seems to have an answer. The family environment, full of guilt complexes, stifles any and all communication. School regurgitates a blind, foolish system of education without any attempt at true understanding. And they, trapped in fear and ignorance, follow their instincts and fumblingly discover their burgeoning sexuality. There in the dark, where innocent thought appears to be condemned, a shaft of light will suddenly appear: a path to freedom. But will they be able to follow it?

Frank Wedekind’s masterpiece “Spring’s awakening” has remained a provocative work ever since its first appearance. Full of sensitivity, lyricism and tenderness, it embraces adolescent concerns and the need for real contact with parents and teachers, while at the same time recognising the adult world’s inability to respond to their cry for help. Through the directorial vision of Nikos Mastorakis, the National’s production will focus on the modern dimension of the play and its daring viewpoint.
