Euripides' play at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
21.6.2009
The National Theatre presents "Alcestis" the well known play by Euripides that focuses on the conflict between Death and Apollo, Darkness and Light, on tour.
The play
The moment that King Admetus has to die, as his fate has determined, has come. The only way to avoid fate, is if someone will agree to die for him. But Admetus' aged parents refuse: only his young wife Alcestis agrees.
"Alcestis" is a particular play. It was first presented in 438B.C. as the final part of a tetralogy and held the place of a satyr play. The comic elements though present in the play such as Admetus argument with his father or the drunkenness of Hercules suggest more a tragic comedy and less a satyr play.
The character of Alcestes has often been treated as a role model of wifely devotion and self-sacrifice. But is this true? Is Admetus worth her devotion? And is the happy end an ironic comment and not just a simple painless solution? The director Thomas Moschopoulos addresses this strange, ambiguous but also extremely attractive play with a fine cast.
