Εθνικό ΘέατροΕθνικό Θέατρο

The Young People’s Stage for children and young people of all ages has the same goal as always, this year: to offer theatre of the highest artistic value, which takes its subjects from important issues of today and seeks to entertain, excite and enthral young audiences.

In the 2023-2024 season, we invite audiences of all ages to enjoy performances that are imbued with the magic of theatre and explore the world – with all its complexities and contradictions. At the same time, we are developing a multidimensional framework of educational activities aimed at young people of all ages. The dynamic system we know as “theatre for young people” is powered by a group of dedicated and inspired artists and theatre educators, who highlight the way in which theatre is an experience that can change the way we see the world and ourselves. The combination of artistic and educational activities on our stages and in our workshops aims to cultivate critical thinking and social responsibility, as children ask questions about attitudes to life while at the same time acting and reflecting on their choices and decisions.

This year, focussing on all the above, we have commissioned two plays from Chris Cooper for the Children’s Stage and the Youth Stage. Cooper is a great artist and originator of theatre in education in England, who has worked for decades with and for children, and whose plays, methods and approach have inspired thousands of teachers, actors, directors and writers around the world. This commission is the culmination of a two-year collaboration, during which the British dramatist had the opportunity to work with Greek artists, theatre educators, teachers, young playwrights, teenagers from our regular workshops, students from twenty schools in Attica who took part in the studio for writing a new Greek play for teenage theatre, and teenage refugees who live in accommodation facilities and take part in the theatre workshops of the Young People’s Stage. This highly productive work resulted in a new play and an adaptation that deal with many of the crucial issues concernig young people today.

The ultimate goal of all the initiatives of the Young People’s Stage is to be an alternative experience through which young people can get to know themselves as political, historical, and social beings, and to help them to cultivate values, to shield themselves mentally, and to develop their critical thinking and ultimately their own voices. Theatre for young people can and must be a forum for study, research and experimentation by established artists. It has undeniable artistic value and is an integral part of every civilised society.
