A soiree is a place where people come together. If we were insects, mosquitoes or ants, say, such a gathering would be something quite normal. As human beings, though, we find it a peculiar situation: neither a meeting, nor an assembly, nor yet a chance encounter. It involves no small amount of dissembling, yet also gives rise to true feelings, and Elias Kapetanakis examines both sides of the coin in this 19th century comedy.
"Kanigunta", a theatre company well known for its productions of Electra, The Shepherdess and Genesis Νο 2, presents an entertaining 19th-century Greek comedy. The play mercilessly exposes the corruption, priggishness, foolishness, ignorance and sheep-like behaviour of the Athenian bourgeoisie of that time, but in such a way that the similarities with today are both startling and hilarious.
