Selected accounts of foreign travellers and tourists in Greece when it was still under Ottoman rule, before the war of independence, and in the newly created state. Texts by important figures who visited Greece in those years cover their expectations before they arrived, imagined encounters with the ancient world, their initial contact with the reality, and growing familiarity.
