SEASON 2010/11

17.9.2010

The challenge for 2010/11 at the National Theatre of Greece is to infuse to our audience, with “spirit ascetic”, -not miserable, not introvert-, a new prospect, a positive spirit, a glance of optimism to the future. But at the same time, we want to face the hard truth, or put up the mirror to ourselves. Thus, our repertory includes all the tough issues of nowadays: the rough consequences of modern immigration, the existential loneliness of globalized man, the collapse of hallucinations, the unequal fight of the individual with the social conventions and the unrelenting structures of power, the tragicomic need for social exhibition but also for love, and the adventurous history of our homeland, from Homeric up to the first post-war years.

Every year, the “Ancient Heritage, New Perspectives” cycle of productions will present works from ancient Greek literature adapted for the stage. The cycle will begin this year with Homer's Iliad. To mark the completion of its translation by the great classical scholar Dimitris Maronitis, the National Theatre has invited some of Greece’s most important actresses to present the 24 rhapsodies of this great work in an original staged version. Each week, a new rhapsody will be performed by a different actress, each bringing Homer's epic to life in her own inimitable style.
