ZILLER BUILDING - MAIN STAGE

The prince of Guastalla has been neglecting both his duties and his mistress, the Countess Orsina. The reason is a woman named Emilia Galotti, with whom he has become obsessed. Determined to do anything to make her his, he and his adviser hatch a plan to prevent her imminent marriage by in which abducting her and murdering her fiancé. When she ends up in the hands of the prince, his refusal to return her to her father has unforeseen and tragic consequences.
Emilia Galotti is an emblematic work of 18th-century bourgeois realism, which touches on the problem of self determination and the desire of young people for freedom, attacking conservative structures and social mores in the Enlightenment. However, the mechanisms of power, although they now appear in a different guise, are just as inflexible and unyielding as they were two hundred years ago, and continue to put individual moral principles to the test. The play returns to the Greek National Theatre, with an exceptional cast and experienced production team, after 66 years.
It will be directed on the Main Stage by the GNT’s artistic director, Yannis Houvardas.

Main Theatre productions are performed in rotating repertory.
