ZILLER BUILDING - STAGE "NIKOS KOURKOULOS"

Pavlos Matesis is one of Greece’s most important writers not only of theatrical works but also of prose. In The plant carer, he employs humour, irony, exuberant language and a deep understanding of human nature to create one of the finest Greek plays of the 20th century. The story centres on two actors who for years have been viewed as great new talents but have never dared to perform before an audience. Having withdrawn from society, they live in fear, miserable and wretched, isolated and alienated, basing their existence on their relationship with the only person they meet, a man who looks after plants. However, he will prove to have a profound effect on their lives.

In The plant carer, Matesis examines the timeless human issues of freedom, love, friendship, loneliness, support and the search for a meaningful life. With razor-sharp language, an explosive imagination and inspired theatrical situations, Matesis creates an extraordinary metaphor for the human condition and a farce about life and death. The play is directed by one of Greece’s most talented young directors, Ektoras Lygizos, who has recently won a number of accolades for his film Boy eating the bird’s food.
